As many of my students know, I have had computer difficulties this week.  Thankfully thanks to Mr. Tart and the technical support from WCPSS my computer is saved and so is all of our wonderful pictures, videos, etc...

I hope that the new PDF format for our newsletter is working well for everyone at home!  I am loving the comments on the blog about what we are doing in school, what we are excited about, and how motivated we all are to learn!  Just remember this is an educational blog and we should only use it for educational purposes.

I hope everyone has a wonderful and safe weekend!

Well, it's the second week for our newsletter blog and things are already changing!  Instead of posting each new item to the blog each week, I have created a PDF file you can download that is completely safe.  The pdf file is very similar to the emailed newsletter document or the paper document that went home.  I will still post pictures of our MVP and Mystery Reader on the blog, but if you would like more updates, please view the pdf file attached.  Thank you and keep the suggestions and comments coming!  Have a wonderful and safe afternoon!

Welcome to the very first Team Sonntag newsletter blog!

Academics & Objectives

Reading:  Next week we will continue to work with nonfiction texts by making connections and asking questions while we read.

Writing:  Next week we will continue to work on the elements of writing friendly letters and begin our Flat Stanley Projects!  Flat Stanley is by Jeff Brown and it is about a boy who is flattened by a bulletin board and made 1/2 inch thick!  In the story Stanley gets mailed to a friend in California and writes about his adventures.  So as a class we will be making our own Flat Stanleys and mailing him with a letter to someone we know, who might live far away.  In the letter we mail, it explains exactly who Flat Stanley is and that we would like for them to take him on a small adventure.  We also ask that the recipient sends us a picture of Flat Stanley on his adventure with an accompanying letter!  We will post these letters and artifacts in the classroom as part of our project display.  Flat Stanley is so much fun and a great connection to our previous maps & globe unit from social studies!

Also, please send in an address of where your student is sending Flat Stanley so that we can begin mailing our letters next week!  Be as creative as you can and think of someone far away who wou

Math:  Next week we will officially dive head first into multiplication!  This week we briefly went over the idea that multiplication is simply repeated addition or skip counting.  We also discussed the 0 and 1 rules of multiplication:  any number multiplied by 0 is 0!  Also, any number multiplied by 1 is the original number.  For example:  3 x 1 = 3      1,000 x 1 = 1,000

Science:  We are still currently focused on our Soils unit in science and will continue that for the next 3 weeks.

Homework

Picture
Please remember that students will have one page of math homework every night, 20 minutes of reading, and need to complete 10 spelling points by Friday morning.  Also, agendas and reading logs BOTH need to be signed by an adult in order to receive credit for all of their homework.

Field Trips

Picture
On Thursday, October 21st our class will be going to Clemmons State Forest for a nature hike and activities pertaining to our Soil Unit.  Parent chaperons and guests need to have WCPSS clearance within the past year and inform the teacher of their attendance.  A small entrance fee is required at the park as well.  All parents must drive separately to the destination and students must ride to and from the park on the bus.

Students will need to wear athletic shoes for the hike and wear appropriate weather clothing based on the forecast.  We will be eating lunch under a picnic pavilion at the park and then will return to school at approximately 2pm.  Students who typically purchase a school lunch have already pre-ordered one from the cafeteria for the trip, but others must bring their own lunch.  Water bottles are also suggested for students to bring and carry as we will be moving quite a bit.

Parents, please let me know if you would like to attend the field trip.  :)

Important Dates

October 21st - Field Trip to Clemmons State Forest 9:15am - approx. 2pm

The big secret in life is that there is no big secret. Whatever your goal, you can get there if you're willing to work.

The Team Sonntag Website has officially been published and is now online for us to view from school, home, or anywhere else you have internet access!  I'm so excited to use this website as a way to communicate with students, parents, and families even when we aren't in school.  Keep checking in with our Team Sonntag Blog for weekly updates and our class newsletter!

In order to GO GREEN I have decided to post our newsletter in our classroom blog.  Hopefully this will work out well and any feedback would be greatly appreciated as to how this blog is useful or ideas you may have.  So again WELCOME TO THE START OF SOMETHING GREAT!
